Some wash out to sea
into the fathomless abyss
of the unconscious

Some sleep
in the chrysalis
of the churning tides

Some wash ashore
fragmented and
tattered by time

Some float
in the off-shore shallows
invisibly like jellyfish

Waiting to cling to us
ready to sting us
with their painful tentacles

Should we attempt
to wade out
and reclaim them
